New Delhi: In a shocking case reported from Etah in Uttar Pradesh, a 10-year-old boy brought his mother's body for post mortem alone, after she died at a district hospital. The woman was being treated for tuberculosis and HIV and passed away on Wednesday night at the district hospital, according to a report in the Times of India. No family members, relatives or neighbours were present with the boy during his mother's treatment and after she passed away, he sat for hours beside her body, waiting for help.
The 10-year-old boy had no one to turn to after his mother passed away. He along with a hospital staff member, reportedly took the body to the morgue for post mortem. It was then that the police were informed about the entire matter.
As soon as the local police came to know about the case, where a 10-year-old boy was the only relative present for post mortem, they rushed officials to the hospital. They assisted the boy with all further formalities.
The boy said that his father had also died of AIDS the previous year. He cried that he had to stop going to school after his father's death and was taking care of his sick mother. The boy said that after his father's death, all their relatives stopped talking to them and never visited home, even though his mother was so sick. According to the boy, his mother received treatment in Kanpur and at Lohia Hospital in Farrukhabad, but even then could not survive.
"My uncle does not even know about my mother's passing", cried the 10-year-old child.
The woman who was 52 was being treated at the Veerangana Avanti Bai Medical College, Etah.
According to eyewitnesses, the hospital staff helped put the body on a stretcher and the boy took it to the mortuary alone. Hours later, as word spread some distant relatives showed up at the hospital.
The boy however did not move away from his mother's body, until an uncle arrived. The uncle of the boy reportedly resides in Kasganj, which is 60 kilometres from Etah.
According to the district health officials, the woman had been treated for Tuberculosis in 2017. They said that at that time, the patient had received all available aid and had been discharged from the hospital after recovering. The Chief Medical Officer said that they are reviewing whether the woman was provided all government aids this time, when she came in for treatment for HIV.
