New Delhi: As the ongoing tariff row between India and the US continues, the Ministry of External Affairs has debunked fake claims circulating on social media for the last few days. In a post on X, the fact-checking unit of the MEA dismissed reports claiming India is aiming to review American goods exempted from tariffs as it is expecting a favourable negotiation from the US after it imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods.
In a separate post on X, the MEA's fact-checking unit dismissed a report that stated that India is reviewing its bilateral agreements with the United States and considering suspending them "if such hostile economic policies continue."
After imposition of the sky-high tariffs of 25 percent on India by the US, both India and the US are aiming to establish a mutually beneficial trade agreement, according to a report in Hindustan Times.
"We are engaged through virtual mode as of date and likely to iron out remaining differences when the American negotiating team visits India for the sixth physical round this month," HT quoted one of the officials as saying. The American delegation is expected to arrive in New Delhi on August 24 to participate in the sixth round of talks.
Even as multiple rounds of discussions about negotiations were carried out between the US and India, President Donald Trump on a post on Truth Social last week, imposed a 25 percent tariff on New Delhi.
On August 1, the US imposed 25 percent tariffs on India. To make matters worse, it imposed an extra penalty for India's oil and military purchases from Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country."
The next day, to everyone's shock, the US president made another controversial post' signifying India and Russia, calling on both nations to "take their dead economies and go down together." Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reacting to the post, responded to it at a public rally in Varanasi, claiming India, "to set to become the third -largest economy in the world." The Opposition Parties also reacted to the PM's remark on India's economy.
