Dehradun: The holy shrine of Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag district has been experiencing snowfall for the past four days. On Monday, heavy snow covered the temple and surrounding peaks, creating a beautiful silver view. Devotees and tourists were delighted to see the shrine wrapped in a white blanket.
Temperatures in the Kedarnath Valley have dropped below freezing, making life difficult. The pond on the trekking route has frozen, and ongoing reconstruction work at the shrine has been affected. The cold wave has also spread to lower areas, increasing the intensity of winter.
Rain and snow in other districts
According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh today. Snowfall is likely in areas above 2,800 meters.
Meanwhile, the plains of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri, may see dense fog and frost. A yellow alert has been issued for these districts. On Monday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 20.8 degrees Celsius. Although fog cleared during the day, cold winds kept the chill alive.
Extreme cold has frozen rivers and streams in Gangotri
In Gangotri, extreme cold has frozen rivers and streams, forming thick layers of frost. The Bhagirathi River flows very little due to heavy ice, while Kedar Ganga, Rishikur Nala, Pagal Nala, and Chidbasa Nala are completely frozen. Drinking water lines have also frozen, creating severe hardship for residents, temple staff, and police personnel. Water supply is being managed by melting frost with fire, highlighting the tough winter conditions.
Tourists rush to snow-covered hills
The snowfall has attracted tourists to the Niti Valley of Chamoli district, where the Dronagiri hills are covered in snow. The picturesque view has created excitement among visitors.
However, the severe cold has also caused problems. Water in taps has frozen, and residents are struggling with daily needs.
Farmers and locals face challenges
While tourists enjoy the snow, locals are facing difficulties. The freezing temperatures have disrupted water supply and made routine work harder. Farmers are also worried about the impact of the cold wave on crops. Despite these challenges, the snowfall has added natural beauty to the region, turning Kedarnath and nearby areas into a winter wonderland.
