Dehradun: The winter chill has tightened its grip on Uttarakhand, with the plains turning colder than the mountains. Dry weather, dense fog, and frost have combined to create bone‑chilling conditions, affecting daily life and health across the state.
According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures in several plains districts have dropped below those in the hilly regions. Roorkee’s maximum temperature, for instance, is lower than that of Mussoorie and Nainital. Dense fog in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Dehradun has intensified the cold, while frost continues to trouble residents in mountainous areas.
Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 21.6°C on Monday
On Monday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 21.6°C and a minimum of 4.8°C. Udham Singh Nagar reported a maximum of 16.8°C and a minimum of 6.2°C. In contrast, Mukteshwar’s temperature hovered around 4°C, while New Tehri recorded a maximum of 16.2°C and a minimum of 4.3°C.
Yellow alert issued
The Meteorological Center has issued a yellow alert for frost in hilly areas and dense fog in plains. Cold day conditions are likely to persist in parts of Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar. The alert covers Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun.
Health concerns rise
The severe cold has hit vulnerable groups the hardest. Elderly people and children are facing difficulties, while hospitals are reporting a rise in patients suffering from colds, coughs, and flu. Doctors warn that the dry weather is also causing breathing problems. They advise residents to avoid exposure to cold winds, wear protective clothing, and drink lukewarm water to stay safe.
Sunshine brings brief relief
Dehradun experienced light fog in the morning on Monday, but bright sunshine later in the day provided some relief. However, the cold returned sharply in the evening, reminding residents of the harsh winter conditions.
Rain and snowfall likely on January 17
While the weather is expected to remain dry until January 16, relief may arrive on January 17. The Meteorological Department forecasts snowfall on higher peaks and light rain in lower areas as a western disturbance becomes active. This change could ease the dry cold and bring much‑needed moisture to the region.
Uttarakhand’s winter has turned severe, with plains colder than the hills and health concerns mounting. With frost and fog alerts in place, residents are bracing for more cold days.
