Uttarakhand weather update: Snowfall predicted above 3,200m peaks; rain likely in Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, other districts
The Meteorological Center has forecast snowfall on peaks above 3,200 meters and rain in Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Uttarkashi from Friday. Minimum temperatures are already below normal, intensifying cold nights, while frost and fog are adding to difficulties in the hills and plains.
Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand is set to change from Friday, with the Meteorological Center predicting snowfall on peaks above 3,200 meters and light rain in several districts including Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Uttarkashi.
Currently, the state is experiencing dry weather, with maximum temperatures higher than normal. However, the minimum temperature has dropped, making mornings and evenings colder. Bright sunshine during the day has not reduced the chill, as cold winds continue to trouble residents.
Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 24.9°C on Wednesday
On Wednesday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 24.9°C and a minimum of 7.6°C. In Udham Singh Nagar, the maximum was 24.8°C and the minimum 5.2°C. Hill stations reported even lower readings: Mukteshwar had a maximum of 15.7°C and minimum of 4.4°C, while Nainital recorded 17.1°C and 4.3°C.
The Meteorological Center has warned that frost in mountainous areas is already making vehicular movement difficult. With the activation of a western disturbance from Friday, conditions are expected to worsen with rain and snowfall in higher regions.
Snowfall in high-altitude areas will also impact lower regions
Officials said snowfall in high-altitude areas will also impact lower regions, bringing down temperatures further. Plains, however, are expected to remain largely clear, though light fog may continue to affect visibility in the mornings.
Residents in hilly districts have been advised to prepare for colder nights and possible travel disruptions. Farmers are also keeping a close watch, as sudden changes in temperature and moisture can affect crops.
Consistent drop in minimum temperatures is intensifying
The Meteorological Center noted that while maximum temperatures remain close to or above normal due to sunshine, the consistent drop in minimum temperatures is intensifying the severity of cold nights. This pattern is expected to continue through the weekend. With snowfall predicted in high-altitude areas and rain in mid-altitude districts, Uttarakhand is set to experience the arrival of peak winter conditions.
