New Delhi: West Bengal, or more specifically Darjeeling and the rest of North Bengal, have been battered by heavy rainfall on Sunday. It triggered floods and landslides that claimed at least 23 lives, including seven children. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for North Bengal, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong, warning of extremely heavy rainfall through October 6.
Amid such a scenario, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh and Malda North MP Khagen Murmu went to visit the victims and take stock of the situation. However, they were fatally attacked by unidentified people. Murmu was pelted with stones and his head was injured.
Murmu was taken to the hospital in a bleeding state. MLA Shankar Ghosh said that his car was targeted in the attack, and even the central forces couldn't control the situation. The glass of the car is broken, and allegations are being raised against wrongdoers allegedly sheltered by the ruling TMC in the state.
The above-mentioned incident took place in Jalpaiguri's Nagrakata. As per the schedule, the MLA and MP were going in a car to inspect the areas affected by floods and landslides. However, it is alleged that the miscreants attacked them. Ghosh said, "The car's window was broken. They hit him with a baton. Khagen Da is lying in a bloody state."
Meanwhile, North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha told TV9 Bangla that he had not heard of any such incident. The minister said, "I have not heard anything. I do not know of it." At the same time, Udayan has refuted the allegations levelled against the TMC. He said, "Who said our people did it? Common people could have done it out of anger."
Shankar Ghosh has brought forward a video in which Khagen Murmu can be seen sitting in a car covered in blood. It is alleged that the MP and MLA were on their way out of the building when the miscreants attacked them from behind. They tried to run away in fear, and the video shows them being beaten from behind as they were getting into the car. The top BJP leadership in West Bengal has blamed the TMC for indulging in politics instead of helping common people in their distress.
