New Delhi: Like every year, the Dev Deepawali festival 2025 in Varanasi is expected to attract thousands of visitors from across India and abroad. On this sacred night, the ghats along the Ganga glow with millions of earthen lamps lit together, creating a breathtaking view. However, the heavy footfall during the celebration often leads to major traffic congestion and restricted access around popular ghats. Many roads are closed or diverted to manage the large crowds, making local travel and sightseeing a real challenge.
To help you enjoy the festival smoothly, here’s a detailed Varanasi Dev Deepawali traffic plan as per the advisories laid out by the city administration and police to control the crowd and traffic. It covers everything from routes to take from the airport or railway station and the best parking spots to crowd-free pathways and safe exit routes. Check it out here.
1. Varanasi traffic control plan
No Entry Corridors: Around Dashashwamedh Ghat, Godowlia, and Assi Ghat stretch.
Parking lots: Maidagin, Luxa, Sigra/Maldahiya.
Drop-off points: e-rickshaw stands
2. Route from Varanasi Airport to Dashashwamedh Ghat
If you are travelling from the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, you might be dropped off at the Maidagin or Luxa parking lot, and from there it will be a 10-25 minute walk to Dashashwamedh.
3. Route from Varanasi Junction to Assi Ghat
Your pick-up point will be from the Manduadih station exit, which will go through the Manduadih-Cantt connector, then Golgadda or Rajatalab. You will be dropped off at Maidagin or Sigra. If the Godowlia route is closed, you will have to walk from there. Alternatively, you can exit via Cantt overbridge and use the northbound routes.
4. Route from Lanka to Assi Ghat Dev Deepawali
This road will be less congested than the central ghat areas. The recommended route would be to cover the BHU gate, Assi Road, and Assi Ghat staging area. Walking or taking an e-rickshaw is much faster. The best route will be through the Nadesar-BHU roads south to the ring road.
5. Route from Godowlia or Mall area to Dashashwamedh Ghat
If you are in Godowlia, quickly walk to the ghats before barricades are tightened. Otherwise, you will get the Maidagin or Maldahiya drop and walk. You can also exit Godowlia via Golgadda, Rajatalab, and take the north or outward bound.
6. Route from Sigra, Maldahiya, Rajghat to the ghats
You can take advantage of multiple municipal lots at Sigra or Maldahiya, which often become overflow park-and-ride hubs. And from there, you will have to walk down to the ghats. Just follow the crowd and you will arrive easily. You can also choose the outer roads.
7. Route from Ramnagar, Sarnath to ghats
Arrive at Ramnagar or Sarnath and have a pre-booked boat for reaching Dashashwamedh or Assi Ghat. For escape, simply boat back or exit via the north riverside instead of trying to drive through the ghat zones.
With the right information and a bit of planning, you can experience the spiritual beauty of Dev Deepawali 2025 without getting caught in the rush.
