At the Indian International Space Conclave in Delhi, Gaganyatri Shubhanshu Shukla said, “When you cross the boundary of space, you are given a number, and I was number 634. But when I came back, kids told me: ‘We didn’t know that there is an ISS in space before you went; we cared because you were there.’ When you see someone like yourself doing things you find impossible, it gives you courage to dream. We have established extremely ambitious goals, but for us to achieve that, all of us have to be active participants. Sky was never the limit. Not for me, not for you and not for Bharat.” Shukla became the first Indian to visit the International Space Station earlier in the year with the Axiom 4 mission.

Group Captain Angad Pratap said “The intent of India in the domain of space is very, very clear as to what it wants to do and the kind of role it wants to play in the future. The industry partners have been a major part of this nation-building process, and today we are at an inflection point wherein those kind of investments are going to come back in the form of dividends. It is not just about sending humans to space, but it is majorly about conducting research work in microgravity environment and creating space tourism which will bring in a lot of revenue and a lot of other opportunities.” Right from the start of the space programme, ISRO has been committed to the peaceful use of outer space for the benefit of all humans on Earth.

Why India needs to go to space

Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair said, “Why should an Indian go to space? We missed the nuclear high table. We missed the UN Security Council high table. It is the world’s requirement that an Indian goes to space, not just India’s. This time when the new laws are going to be written for space, we are going to be at the high table as a representative of everybody else who is not there right now. This is the legacy of India which we are going to give to our entire world. And we’ve always been on space. We were so ahead that we decided, let’s relax for a bit and let the rest of the world catch up. But its time you start reintegrating your own values in the Indian knowledge system.”
