New Delhi: Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has been appointed as the head coach of the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriorz (UPW) ahead of the upcoming season. He was removed as the Indian men's team assistant coach recently after less than a year in the job.

Nayar joins UPW after the franchise parted ways with Jon Lewis, who was the head coach of the team for the last three seasons. He helped the franchise during the team's off-season training camps in Bengaluru after the first season of the league.

He played for Mumbai with distinction in first-class cricket and also played three ODI matches for India before announcing his retirement in 2019. After that, he became the assistant coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during their title-winning campaign in 2024.

Several cricketers talked about the positive impact that he brought to their game. Nayar was also the head coach of the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in 2022.

He became Team India's assistant coach after Gambhir was appointed as head coach and was part of the team that won the Champions Trophy in Dubai earlier this year. However, his contract was terminated by the BCCI after that, and he returned as KKR's assistant coach for IPL 2025.

'I'm thrilled to take on this new role': Abhishek Nayar

Speaking on his appointment, Nayar said that he really enjoyed his time working with the UP Warriorz before, and he's thrilled to take on the new role. He further added that the WPL is a fantastic platform for women's cricket, and he's looking forward to working closely with the management to build a strong team.

"UP Warriorz already have a strong foundation in place, and I believe we can build something truly special. There is incredible potential, and I will give it my all to help win their first-ever title this season," Nayar said.
