New Delhi: Afghanistan spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad breached level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their last Asia Cup 2025 game against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, September 18.
Both spinners were found to have breached the ICC code of conduct, as the ICC confirmed that Noor's showing dissent at an umpire's decision during the 16th over of the second innings was measured under Article 2.8.
The incident happened when the on-field umpire gave a wide call, but Noor wasn't pleased with the decision of the umpire. The spinner gave an angry reaction against the umpire's decision, which led to a penalty as he was handed one demerit point to the left-arm spinner.
Meanwhile, Mujeeb was charged under Article 2.2 for "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings" as he broke the stumps with his towel in frustration.
A formal complaint was lodged against both spinners, and a fine of up to 50 percent of their match fees will be handed over to them. This is their first disciplinary incident in the current 24-month cycle.
The new ICC regulations state that four or more demerit points within a 24-month cycle will be converted to suspension points, which will lead to an automatic ban for the players. Two suspension points are equal to one Test ban or two ODIs or two T20I matches, whichever comes first, for the specific player's schedule.
The match referee of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel, Richie Richardson, handled all the disciplinary-related issues. After the game, Noor and Mujeeb accepted their offences to eliminate the formal hearing.
Asif Yaqoob and Virender Sharma were the on-field umpires who charged the offence on Noor and Mujeeb.
The ICC T20 World Cup last edition's semi-finalists, Afghanistan, were knocked out of the Asia Cup 2025 in the group stage. Afghans won just one match in the league stage, that too came against Hong Kong.
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified for the Super 4 after both sides defeated Afghanistan. In the last Asia Cup edition, Afghanistan didn't qualify for the Super 4s, and now again they have been eliminated in the group stage.
