New Delhi: All all-round performance helped the India women's team beat Sri Lanka by 59 runs via DLS method in ODI World Cup opener on Tuesday to begin their campaign in style. Chasing a target of 270 in 47 overs after almost 80 minutes were lost in the game due to rain in first innings, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 211 runs in 45.4 overs in front of disciplined bowling line up.
Deepti Sharma, who played an impactful knock with the bat, starred with the ball as well picking up three crucial wickets. Shree Charani and Sneh Rana also bowled to perfection claiming two wickets apiece to dent the Sri Lanka women innings. The other three bowlers used by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur - Pratika Rawal, Amanjot Kaur and Kranti Gaud also didn't disappoint claiming one wicket each.
For the Lankan women, skipper Chamari Athapaththu was the standout batter with 43 runs while Nilakshi de Silva and Harshitha Samarawickrama scored 35 and 29 runs respectively showcasing some courage during the chase. Rest of the batters flopped departing back to the pavilion after tiny scores.
Batting first, India were in a precarious position at 124/6 with Inoka Ranaweera leading the charge with wickets for the Lankans but a brilliant counterattack by Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur with a 103-run stand for the seventh wicket helped their team get out of the situation. Both the batters smashed valuable fifties while Sneh Rana scored quick 28 runs to help India cross the 250-run mark and put up a good total on the board.
Apart from these three, Harleen Deol scored 48 runs while opener Pratika Rawal smashed 37 runs to give the team a respectable start, though they lost big wickets in the middle overs. Skipper Harmanpreet could only score 21 while Smriti Mandhana was out for just 8.
