New Delhi: After South Africa ruled the opening two sessions on the first day of the second Test match against India in Guwahati on Saturday, the hosts bounced back with flurry of wickets in the third and final day to regain control.
South African batters tested the Indian bowlers big time in the first two sessions losing just two wickets but the bowling contingent came back to haunt the visiting side in the final sessions picking four more wickets. When stumps were called on Day 1 at Barsapara cricket stadium, South Africa were placed at 247 for 6 with Senuran Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne holding the fort.
While Muthusamy was on 25 runs while Verreynne was 1 not out when the day was ended due to bad light after completing 81.5 overs. Kuldeep Yadav proved to be the star bowler for India with 3 wickets while Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj picked one wicket apiece.
The third session belonged to the hosts completely as towards the end after India took the second new ball, Siraj made full use of it scalping the wicket of well-set batter Tony de Zorzi for 28 runs and breaking a 45-run stand.
It was the lethal 84-run partnership between skipper Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs which troubled the Indian bowlers but Jadeja came to rescue India by sending back Bavuma for 41 runs. Stubbs too was sent back soon after for 49 by Kuldeep as the South Africa's decline started on from there.
Earlier Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton set the perfect base for the Proteas with an opening partnership of 82 runs. Bumrah got rid of Markram for 38 while Rickelton was dismissed by Kuldeep after he scored 35 runs. While the Proteas would be hoping to add maximum runs to their score on the second day of the game, India would aim to pack the rest four wickets as quickly as possibly.
