New Delhi: Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar on Friday said that it is silly to put star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on trial after every game, though saying that they would definitely be assessed after their performance. Both the veteran players would be making a return in the 50-over format in the Australia series commencing from October 19, Sunday in Perth.
Rohit and Kohli would be returning after a big gap of seven months and if reports are to be believed, they would be judged on a series to series basis going into the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Speaking at the 'NDTV World Summit', the former Indian all-rounder said that once both the senior batters start playing, they would be assessed but they are not on trial.
Though the chief selector again avoided committing on their selection for an event which is two years away, he reiterating what he said in Ahmedabad after announcing Shubman Gill as the new skipper for the ODI setup. He further said that if both the players do not get runs in Australia, they would not be dropped and similarly of they score three centuries in Australia, they wouldn't be selected for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Agarkar also clarified that it was Kohli and Rohit, who had decided to quit Test cricket and the selection committee would have been happy to have their experience. 'If any place where we would have liked experience is England. Both are stalwarts and they had approached us. And once they have decided, you have got to respect their decision,' Agarkar said.
India's white-ball tour to Australia comprises three ODI games and five T20I matches. The first of the three ODIs would begin on Sunday in Perth for which both the veteran players have been seen practicing hard from past couple of days.
