New Delhi: India pulled off a stunning six-run win against England in the fifth Test to square the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at 2-2.
India needed four wickets and England 35 runs to win on the fifth day at The Oval. Mohammed Siraj picked up three on the day for overall innings figures of 5/104 to guide India to a famous win.
Jamie Overton gave the hosts a brilliant start and smacked Prasidh Krishna for two back-to-back boundaries in the first over. Mohammed Siraj removed Jamie Smith for 2 with a short of length delivery which wobbled away, and the batter tried to attack the bowler but ended up edging the ball to the keeper.
The Indian pacers made brilliant use of the overcast conditions at the Oval to trouble the English batters. Siraj removed Jamie Overton with a nip-backer and took his fourth wicket of the match.
Prasidh bowled a yorker delivery to dismiss Josh Tongue on a duck, the ball angled toward stumps at great speed. Atkinson hit a maximum against Siraj over long-on to put some pressure back on the visitors but the Indian fast bowlers were in complete control of the match.
Siraj picked up the last wicket of the match by dismissing Atkinson for 17 with a yorker delivery and helped the team to win the thrilling Test match.
England won the toss and elected to bowl first on the grassy surface, and the bowlers found great assistance from the pitch. The Indian batters struggled to perform in the overcast conditions, but Karun Nair played a gritty knock and hit a fifty, while Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar also made valuable contributions with the bat. Gus Atkinson took five wickets on his Test comeback as the visitors were bowled out for 224.
In response, England got off to a sensational start as Crawley and Duckett forged a 92-run partnership for the first wicket within the opening 13 overs. But a brilliant spell from the Indian fast bowlers in the second session triggered a middle-order collapse as the hosts were bowled out for 247. Siraj and Prasidh picked up 4 wickets each in the first innings.
The surface flattened out slightly in the second innings, and Jaiswal completed his second hundred of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy while Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja scored breezy fifties to set a massive target of 374 for the hosts. Josh Tongue took five wickets and Gus Atkinson picked up three wickets in the second innings
The target proved to be massive only on paper, as England batters played counter-attacking knocks during the run chase. Duckett played aggressive shots and scored his fifty, while Root played an anchoring role, but it was Harry Brook who notched up 111 off just 98 balls and turned the match in England's favour.
He was removed shortly after his hundred by Akash Deep, while Joe Root also completed his hundred, but then he was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna. The Indian pacers found great help from the pitch and rediscovered their form on Day 4 evening to trouble the England batters. However, the play was called off due to bad light and heavy rain.
India's fast bowlers came out attacking once again on the final day as Siraj picked up three wickets while Prasidh also took one wicket and helped Team India to level the series at 2-2.
