New Delhi: Indian batter Tilak Varma on Tuesday scripted T20I history during India's first game of the series against South Africa in Cuttack. Tilak etched his name in the history books by becoming the fifth fastest Indian batter to score 1000 runs in the format. The left-handed dashing batter achieved the milestone in his 34th T20I innings.
Tilak, who became only the 12th Indian batter to registered the landmark, smacked South African pacer Marco Jansen for a boundary to get to this feat. By virtue of this record, he joined the elite list of Indian batters headed by star player Virat Kohli who reached 1000 runs in the shortest format in his 27th T20I inning.
Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul are the other Indian batters in the elusive list of cricketers. While Kohli has got to the milestone in 27 innings, Abhishek is the next best reaching 1000 runs in 28 T20I innings. KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav hold the third and the fourth spot respectively reaching the feat in 29 and 31 innings.
Meanwhile, Tilak who started off the innings on a fiery note, failed to take it beyond 26 runs. The southpaw was out for 26 off 32 balls which included two boundaries and one massive six. Aiming a pull shot on a short pitched delivery, Tilak ended up mistiming it as Marco Jansen took hold of the catch on the delivery of Lungi Ngidi.
Hardik Pandya made a superlative return to competitive cricket as his 28-ball 59-run knock propelled India to 175 for 6 in the stipulated 20 overs. The Men in Blue, after a regular fall in the wickets, looked on course of around 150 runs but Hardik's blistering fifty took them to a competitive total.
Lungi Ngidi shined with the ball for the Proteas with 3 wickets in his four-over spell.
