New Delhi: India met the same fate as that of South Africa as the hosts were bundled out for just 189 runs on the second day of the first Test match at Eden Gardens. In reply to South Africa's first innings score of 159 runs, Indian batters could just add 30 more runs, going back to the pavilion with just a paltry first-innings lead.
At Lunch on Day 2, India were solidly placed at 138 for 4 but the batters failed to carry on the momentum from there losing wickets in a quick succession. The hosts lost 5 wickets for just 51 runs after the break and succumbed just before Tea at the iconic Kolkata stadium.
Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa claiming 4 wickets while Marco Jansen also troubled the Indian side with 3 wickets. Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch also contributed with a wicket apiece.
KL Rahul emerges as top-scorer for hosts
For India, KL Rahul emerged as the top-scorer with 39 runs while Washington Sundar contributed 29 runs. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja both added 27 runs each for the Indian side but failed to convert the good starts into big totals as the case was with the visitors in the first innings. Shubman Gill, who went back retired hurt on 4, could not come to bat again which folded the Indian innings.
With more than three days remaining in the Test match, the Proteas would like to take it easy and slow and pile up a big total to make the chase difficult for the hosts. On the other hand, India would be looking to get rid of the wickets quickly.
At Tea on second day, South Africa had scored 18 runs at the loss of one wicket, trailing India's first innings score by 12 more runs. Kuldeep Yadav drew the first blood for the hosts dismissing Ryan Rickelton for 11 runs. The hosts would want to bundle out the side as early as possible.
