Suryakumar Yadav-led India will lock horns with South Africa in a five-match T20I series, which gets underway on Tuesday, December 09. After suffering a humiliating 2-0 whitewash in the Test series against the Proteas at home, India bounced back to win the three-match ODI series 2-1. The attention now shifts to T20Is as the two teams gear up to face each other in the series opener at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
The five T20Is will be played in Cuttack, Mullanpur, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Ahmedabad from December 9 to 19. The series will mark the return of vice-captain Shubman Gill and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who recently recovered from their respective injuries.
Gill missed the Test and ODI series against South Africa due to a neck injury, while Hardik was out of action for a couple of months after injuring his left quadricep. Hardik's return to the T20I setup meant that the selectors had to leave out Rinku Singh from the 15-man squad for the five-match series against the Proteas.
Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will also return for India after being rested from the recently concluded ODI series against the Proteas. While Suryakumar will continue to lead the side, India's batting line-up wears a settled look with the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Gill, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube in the squad.
India have picked two wicket-keepers - Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma, and it remains to be seen who will be the first-choice in the XI. Bumrah will lead the pace attack consisting of Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Hardik. Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy are the two specialist spinners in the squad.
South Africa will continue to miss the services of their star pacer Kagiso Rabada, who is yet to attain full fitness. The visitors will also be without batter Tony de Zorzi and left-arm pacer Nandre Burger, who have been ruled out of the five-match series due to respective injuries.
