New landmark for Smriti Mandhana in women's T20Is

The left hander needed 18 runs before the match to enter the 4000-tun mark, and reached it in 15 balls with a boundary over the covers off Chamari Athapaththu inside the powerplay overs.

New Delhi: India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana became the first Indian women’s batter to reach 4000 runs in T20Is in India’s eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

The opener scored 25 runs as India chased down a 122-run target in 14.4 overs during the first of a five-match series against Sri Lanka at the ACA-VDCA stadium.

She was dismissed after a run-a-ball in the ninth over with India’s score at 67 for two and now is second in the list of leading scores in T20Is.

New Zealand veteran Suzie Bates leads the chart with 4716 runs, followed by Mandhana (4007).

It was the 29-year-old’s first international match since India defeated South Africa to lift their maiden Women’s ODI World Cup last month.

In men's cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohi have scored over 4000 runs before their retirement after India's men's T20 World cup win last year.
