Notable absentees, two uncapped stars in Australia's T20I squad for Pakistan tour

As many as five top players, who will be part of Australia's T20I World Cup 2026 squad, will miss the three-match series in Pakistan.

New Delhi: Australia have announced a 17-member squad for the upcoming three-T20I series in Pakistan, starting on January 29. All-rounder Tim David is yet to recover from a hamstring injury but remains on track for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Meanwhile, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Ellis are other notable absentees for the series in Lahore.

In total, only 10 members of the T20 World Cup squad will feature in the series, including the uncapped duo Mahli Beardman and Jack Edwards.

Beardmen and Edwards were rewarded for their consistent performances in the ongoing Big Bash League season.

Maxell and Ellis rested

While Maxwell and Ellis have been rested, the trio of Cummins, Hazelwood and David are on the road to recovery following their respective injury issues.

Sean Abbott, Beardman, Ben Dwarshuis, Edwards, Mitch Owen, Josh Phillippe and Matt Renshaw have come into the squad as cover.

Players who are still participating in the (BBL) will join the national squad after the conclusion of their franchise's respective campaigns.

"The series is a great opportunity for those on the brink of selection and some young players we rate highly for valuable experience with the World Cup group in Pakistan," Australia's Chair of Selectors, George Bailey, told the media while announcing the squad.

"Some are already experienced international players, (while) Mahli Beardman has been with the group a number of times and Jack Edwards joined (the squad) for the last one-day match against India in Sydney last year."

All three matches will be held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on January 29, January 31 and February 1.
