New Delhi: Virat Kohli might fall short of a record extending ton but through his 93-run knock plundered multiple records in India’s four-wicket win over New Zealand in the first ODI of a three-match series in Vadodara on Sunday.
India chased down a 301 target in 49 overs after the Kiwis posted 300 for eight when sent into bat at the BCA stadium.
Kohli was once again the man who set up the chase through his 91-ball knock laced with eight boundaries and a six as he became the quickest batter to 28,000 runs in international cricket and also second in the all-time list behind Sachin Tendulkar.
In his 624th innings, Kohli reached the landmark with a boundary off leg-spinner Adithya Ashok, taking 20 less innings than Tendulkar while Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, only the third player in the 28,000-run club, needed 666 innings.
With 28,017 runs, the 37-year-old Kohli overtook Sangakkara (28,016) to be second behind Tendulkar (34,357 runs from 782 innings) in the all-time scoring list across formats.
Kohli stitched an 118-run second wicket stand with skipper Shubman Gill (56) and 77 runs with Shreyas Iyer (49) to lay the foundation for India’s win.
Earlier, Daryl Mitchell's counter attacking half century pulled New Zealand to 300 for eight after Indian pacers Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj pegged them back with timely breakthroughs.
Rana (2/65) dismissed openers Devon Conway (56 of 67 balls) and Henry Nicholls (62 off 69 balls) in quick succession just when they were looking to wrestle control through an 117-run partnership.
Siraj (2/40) then sent back Will Young (12) and late-order batter Zak Foulkes (1) before they could pose a threat, but veteran Mitchell timed his innings admirably, scoring 84 off 71 balls, hitting five boundaries and three sixes.
Mitchell put together useful partnerships with Mitchell Hay, skipper Michael Bracewell and newcomer Kristian Clarke to boost the Kiwi total.
New Zealand could have scored more had not Prasidh Krishna (2/60) claimed his wicket towards the end.
