Shubman Gill didnt have an idea about T20 World Cup snub - Report
According to a report in news agency PTI, it had been decided that the right-handed batter won't be picked for T20 WC after the fourth SA T20I was called-off.
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the team's squad for next month's series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup 2026. Vice-captain Shubman Gill was omitted from the squad for the Kiwi series as well as the showpiece event which sent shock waves across the cricketing community.
According to a report in news agency PTI, it had been decided that the right-handed batter won't be picked for the showpiece event in February when the fourth T20I against South Africa was called off but Gill was not informed about the same. The report further mentions that the Indian player got to know about this snub on Saturday morning and in the afternoon, the squad was officially released.
The report mentions that as per a BCCI source, neither skipper Suryakumar Yadav nor head coach Gautam Gambhir informed Gill about this as the decision came as a shock for the 25-year old, who has been encountering a poor form from few days.
Gill wanted to play Ahmedabad T20I
It is also being learnt that the team management had already decided to snub Gill as he wanted to play the fifth and final T20I in Ahmedabad as the injury wasn't that serious but he was not allowed to participate. It was earlier indicated that the under-performing Indian player might be shown the exit route as he scored just 32 runs in the first three matches against the Proteas.
Regarding the final T20I, initially the medical team was fearing a hairline fracture but later scans revealed that it was mere bruise and he could have played the Ahmedabad game on painkillers. During the press conference, it was said that Gill is a talented player but just because he is short of runs, he will not be picked for the showpiece event starting in February.
