New Delhi: In what comes as a big blow for India, Shubman Gill is set to miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa due to his unhealed neck injury. As per a report in news agency PTI, sources in the BCCI have revealed to the agency that Gill's neck injury will take some more time to heal.
In addition, the names of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and senior player KL Rahul are being considered for the ODI captaincy in the Proteas series despite senior player and ex-skipper Rohit Sharma also being in the squad.
If the BCCI sources are to be believed, the injury that Gill suffered during the Australia series is not just restricted to the neck spasm. The medial team has advised him extensive rest and the Indian team management does not want to risk him back into the action soon.
Gill, who suffered a whiplash while batting in the opening Test in Kolkata, was forced to miss the Guwahati Test due to the injury. Meanwhile, Gill is currently in Mumbai where he is undergoing medical tests, including an MRI, to determine the extent of injury.
'All tests are being done to ascertain whether it is a muscular injury or there is a nerve tissue related niggle which would require some more rest. As of now, selectors will be hoping he gets fit for the South Africa T20Is,' the source said.
Meanwhile, Pant happens to be a strong candidate on the captaincy front as he is currently leading the side in the ongoing second Test match against the Proteas in Guwahati, in absence of Gill. Rahul on the other hand, is the first choice as keeper. He also fits in the candidates list as deputy Shreyas Iyer, after his spleen injury in Australia, will take at least two months more to be back in action.
