Sonny Baker, 22, set for international debut as England announce playing XI for first ODI against South Africa

New Delhi: England's young pacer Sonny Baker is set to make his international debut against South Africa in the first ODI match at Headingly, Leeds, on September 2, Tuesday. Baker was rewarded with an international call-up after his impressive performances in the recently concluded The Hundred. Baker got recognition from the fans and the selectors.

The 22-year-old pacer caught everyone's attention with his spell against London Spirit's David Warner.  His stocks further rose after a sensational hat-trick against Northern Supercharger.

"The Hampshire bowler has impressed for his county, for England Lions and with Manchester Originals in The Hundred in recent months, earning him a place in his first international squad," the England Cricket Board (ECB) released the statement on Baker on Monday.

Baker will strengthen England's pace attack in the first ODI and provide support to senior pacers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse.

England picked almost the same playing XI that played the last ODI against the West Indies in June. Only Saqib Mahmood and Matthew Potts couldn't retain their spots as Archer and Baker replaced them. Archer is also returning to the ODI squad after the Champions Trophy 2025.

Jamie Smith is likely to play as a permanent opener. The wicket-keeper batter got another chance after average performances against the West Indies. Phil Salt, who was on paternity leave during England tour's of West Indies, misses out.

Baker also made his first-class debut for England Lions against Australia A earlier this year. In his six County Championship appearances, he has picked up 24 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, at a superb average of 24.04.
