From unprecedented highs to striking lows, 2025 was a rollercoaster year for Indian cricket. It was also a year that marked the change of guard in the Indian men's cricket team as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli quit Test cricket, before Shubman Gill replaced the latter as captain in both ODIs and Tests. The year started with India clinching Champions Trophy glory and ended with a humiliating home Test series whitewash at the hands of South Africa.

It was a memorable year for the Indian women's team as they rewrote history by lifting their maiden ODI World Cup trophy, bringing an end to their long-standing ICC trophy drought. India defeated South Africa in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, marking a watershed moment for women's cricket in the country.

The Indian men's team also enjoyed their fair share of glory as they went on to win the Asia Cup 2025 title after lifting the Champions Trophy at the start of the year. Despite returning home without the trophy after taking a firm stand against Pakistan in the tournament, India's emphatic triumph in the Asia Cup underlined their dominance in T20Is.

While India enjoyed phenomenal success in white-ball cricket under head coach Gautam Gambhir, they failed to replicate it in Test cricket. India succumbed to a 2-0 whitewash at home against South Africa in November, marking their second home Test series defeat in just 13 months. From being a force to reckon with at home to being whitewashed twice in two years, it was a year of retrospection for India in Tests.

India clinch Champions Trophy 2025

Rohit Sharma-led India beat New Zealand in the final to win the Champions Trophy 2025 title in March this year. With their memorable triumph, India became the first team to win their third title in the tournament's history. Rohit & Co. dominated their way to glory as they won the trophy unbeaten.

India began the tournament with a six-wicket win against Bangladesh, before thrashing arch-rivals Pakistan in a high-profile clash in Dubai. The Men in Blue stormed into the final unbeaten after defeating Australia in the semi-final. In the final against New Zealand, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma's brilliant 76 to register a 4-wicket victory to clinch their second ICC title in a row.

India win Asia Cup 2025

In a tournament marred by controversies, India held their own on the field to beat Pakistan and lift the Asia Cup 2025 title. It was India's ninth title as they extended their domination as the most successful side in the competition's history. India rode on a composed knock of 69 runs from Tilak Varma and a brilliant spell from Kuldeep Yadav to beat Pakistan by 5 wickets in the high-pressure final to lift the trophy.

However, the Indian team celebrated and returned home with a trophy after boycotting Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and an interior minister in Pakistan. India maintained a no-handshake policy against Pakistan throughout the tournament and refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, the PCB chief, after winning the final.

India lift maiden Women's ODI World Cup title

In what was a remarkable story of redemption and resilience, the Indian women's team marked an end to their long-standing wait by lifting their maiden ODI World Cup title. Harmanpreet Kaur-led India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in a memorable final at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai to clinch a historic victory.

It was the 83 moment for the Indian women's team as the victory is set to serve as an inspiration to thousands of young girls around the country, who will carry the baton in future. India endured a topsy-turvy campaign in the World Cup, but produced two exceptional performances in the semi-final and the final to attain glory.

Jemimah Rodrigues played the knock of her life to help India pull off a stunning 339-run chase against Australia in the semi-final, before Shafali Verma and captain Harmanpreet starred to help the hosts lift their maiden title by beating South Africa in the final. The historic win can prove to be a game-changing moment for women's sports in the country.

The lows

Humiliating Test series whitewash against South Africa at home

India hit a new low after suffering a 2-0 Test series whitewash at the hands of South Africa at home in November 2025. The Proteas rode on heroics from their spinners to beat India by 30 runs on a rank turner in Kolkata, before making it two wins in a row with an emphatic 408-run win in the 2nd Test in Guwahati.

The defeat in Guwahti was India's heaviest in terms of runs as it exposed their woes in home conditions. Once a dominant force at home in the longest format, India suffered their second Test series whitewash at home in as many years under head coach Gautam Gambhir, who faced the heat from all corners after the humiliating defeat.

Gambhir became the first coach in India's Test history to suffer two Test series whitewashes at home as India endured only the third clean sweep on Indian soil. Incidentally, Hansi Cronje's South Africa had whitewashed India in a two-match Test series at home for the first time in 2000.

India lost only two Test matches at home under former captain Virat Kohli, who led their incredible home dominance. However, the South Africa Test series defeat marked India's 5th loss in their last seven Tests at home, highlighting the need for introspection amid the team's transition in the longest format.
