Ten-man Everton stunned Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday, ending the hosts' five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the decisive goal for Everton after Idrissa Gueye was sent off early in the first half for slapping his teammate Michael Keane following a confrontation in the middle.
There were dramatic scenes at Old Trafford as Gueye and Keane clashed with each other in the 13th minute after Everton defended an attack from United. Gueye was left furious after Keane appeared to have failed to read his pass, which saw the ball go to United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who shot the ball wide from a long distance.
Gueye gave an earful to Keane for his mistake, following which the Everton teammates confronted each other. Gueye slapped Keane on his face during the confrontation and was immediately shown a red card by the on-field referee. His red card was upheld by VAR for a 'clear strike' to Keane's face.
The Senegalese midfielder became the first player to get sent off for clashing against his own teammate since Ricarod Fuller, who was shown a red for clashing with his Stoke City teammate Andy Griffin in 2008. The red card was an early setback for Everton as they were reduced to ten men at a venue where they had won only once since 1992 before Tuesday.
United launches a flurry of attacks to take advantage of the situation after Everton were reduced to ten men. However, they failed to break the deadlock. Everton didn't lose confidence and continued threatening United on the counter. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall eventually punished the home team with a sensational strike in the 29th minute.
Dewsbury-Hall found himself at the edge of United's box and launched a curling effort to beat goalkeeper Seane Lammens, hitting the top corner. Everton managed to defend their lead despite United dominating the proceedings in the second half, securing crucial three points at Old Trafford.
Everton etched their name in record books by becoming the first visiting team to win at Old Trafford despite having a player sent off. United were unbeaten in 46 matches, where the visiting teams were reduced to ten men. The hosts had an incredible 25 shots compared to Everton's 3 in the second half, but England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford did well to keep United at bay.
It was also a night to remember for Everton manager David Moyes, who recorded his first win at Old Trafford as a visiting coach in 19 attempts. With the win, Everton moved to the 11th spot on the Premier League table, equalling United's tally of 18 points after 12 matches.
Gueye apologised to his teammates and Everton fans for his violent reaction during his confrontation with Keane and said he takes full responsibility for his actions. "What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour. I’ll make sure it never happens again," Gueye wrote on his Instagram account.
