New Delhi: Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has opened up about the Indian cricketer who inspires him the most after smashing a record-breaking ton for India U-19 in England.
The 14-year-old left-hander who stunned England U-19 with a fiery 143 off just 78 balls in Worcester shared that it is India captain Shubman Gill's calm and focused approach that he looks up to. Suryavanshi and his U-19 teammates were at Edgbaston watching Gill's marathon double century during the Birmingham Test and it left a deep mark on the young batter.
Suryavanshi said, “I got a lot of inspiration from him because I saw the game. After making 100 and 200, he didn’t leave the game and took the team ahead."
Suryavanshi’s innings against England was not just quick but historic. His century came in just 78 balls, making him the fastest and youngest batter to score a hundred in Youth ODIs. Alongside fellow centurion Vihan Malhotra, Suryavanshi built a massive 219-run stand, providing India U-19 a commanding position in the match.
However, the youngster was not satisfied with just the hundred. Suryavanshi felt he had the time to convert the innings into a double century, taking inspiration from Gill’s ability to bat long.
“I will try to make 200 in the next match. Next time, I will try to play the full fifty overs. The more I make runs, the better it will be for my team,” he added.
Reflecting on his dismissal in the 28th over, Suryavanshi admitted that he could have shown more caution and converted the start into a bigger knock.
I could have batted a bit longer because I had a lot of time. After that, there were 20 overs left. So, I could have made it longer,” he said.
The young star wasn't aware of the record he set until he returned to the dressing room where his team manager Ankit sir informed him about his achievement.
Suryavanshi’s hunger for runs and his ability to learn from every outing marks him as one of India’s most promising young talents. As he continues to take inspiration from Shubman Gill, fans can look forward to seeing more big knocks from him as he aims to play longer innings and contribute consistently to the team’s success.
