In a bizarre turn of events at the World Para Athletics Championships, a Kenyan coach was bitten by a stray dog outside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. Kenyan coach Dennis was in conversation with one of the athletes of the country's contingent outside the competition arena of the stadium, when a stray dog suddenly came and bit him, the official said.
Dennis was hospitalised at a nearby hospital for treatment following the shocking incident. As per an official of the African country team, the coach is out of danger.
"Our coach Mr Dennis was speaking to an athlete near the call room, and a stray dog came out from nowhere and bit him," Joel Atuti, who is travelling with the team as a Government of Kenya representative, told PTI.
"The incident happened around 10am. Blood was oozing out of his leg, and the medical team stationed at the stadium reached there. He was taken to a hospital and given treatment, including injections," he added.
"He is otherwise fine, no problem as of now. He will take some medicines also."
The assembly area for the players before their respective events is the Call room. JLN's two call rooms are situated some meters away from the main competition arena.
It is understood that 35 Dope Sample Officers (DCO) from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) are in the national capital to take samples from the athletes, who numbered approximately 1500.
As the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in Delhi is accredited to WADA, the samples could be tested here, an official confirmed.
"Since, India is the host country, it is but natural that DCOs arranged by NADA will take the dope samples," the official said.
