Apple may hide the selfie camera under the screen in 2027 iPhone

Apple's 2027 iPhone could debut an under-screen front camera, removing all display cutouts for a seamless look. The technology, reportedly in development with LG Innotek, may also appear in Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone.

New Delhi: Apple is reportedly preparing to hide the front-facing camera beneath the display of its 2027 iPhone, marking a major design shift for the company’s 20th anniversary model. The leak, shared by Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, suggests that Apple’s under-screen camera development is progressing on schedule and could appear one year after under-screen Face ID debuts on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in 2026.

If the report holds true, the 2027 iPhone will feature a completely uninterrupted screen with no visible cutouts or notches—something Apple has been gradually working toward since the introduction of the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.

Under-display camera technology in the works

While a few Android brands already use under-display selfie cameras, the results have been far from perfect. The images often look hazy or lack sharpness due to light passing through multiple display layers. Apple seems to have avoided adopting the technology for that reason, though reports indicate the company has been testing its own version for years.

A report from April 2024 said LG Innotek, one of Apple’s key Korean suppliers, has been developing a new optical system that eliminates visible holes when the camera isn’t in use. The setup uses a “freeform optic” multi-lens array that helps reduce distortion and improve brightness. This design could compensate for the light loss that typically occurs when a lens sits beneath the display glass.

It’s unclear if this technology will also be used in Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone, but analysts at JP Morgan recently said the device may feature a 24-megapixel camera beneath the inner display — a major jump over the 4MP or 8MP cameras seen in current under-display models.

A bezel-less 20th anniversary iPhone

According to reports, Apple’s 2027 iPhone will be a radical redesign. The phone could have a bezel-free screen that curves around all four sides, offering a seamless, uninterrupted display for the first time. Some industry insiders also expect Apple to skip the iPhone 19 naming convention altogether, following the same pattern it took in 2017 when it jumped from iPhone 8 to iPhone X for the brand’s 10th anniversary.

The 2027 device is expected to celebrate two decades since the original iPhone was introduced by Steve Jobs in 2007. By then, Apple’s camera and display technologies may finally be ready to deliver what it calls an “all-screen iPhone” — a vision that has been in the making for more than a decade.
