New Delhi: WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature that will let iPhone users decide who can see their profile cover photo. The update is part of WhatsApp’s broader plan to give people more control over how their profiles appear to others. The feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS, available through Apple’s TestFlight programme.
Cover photos, which sit above a user’s profile picture, are also being developed as a new way to personalise profiles. Users will be able to add, move, change, or remove a cover image directly from the app settings. WhatsApp is now preparing privacy options for this feature so users can choose who gets to see these images once they roll out.
WhatsApp is building a dedicated privacy menu for cover photos inside the app’s Privacy section. The layout will follow the same design used for Last Seen, Profile Photo, and About. This means users will not have to learn a new system to manage visibility. Everything will be placed in one familiar location.
These controls will allow users to adjust who can view their cover image without affecting their main profile photo or account details. The goal is to keep the experience simple while giving more flexibility over what others can see.
WhatsApp will provide four privacy options for cover photos. The first one, Everyone, will show the cover photo to any WhatsApp user, including those people not saved as contacts. This is directed towards the users who want a public profile.
The second one, which is My contacts, will only be visible to individuals that have been added to the address book of the user. An option of 'My contacts except' will also be present, and this will allow users to block certain people from viewing the cover image. The last choice will be the 'Nobody' option, which will not show the cover photo to anyone.
The cover photo privacy option is not available and is in its polishing stage. WhatsApp is experimenting with how these controls will be used with the current privacy settings to make it a smooth experience. The feature will be made available in a later iOS update when the company is done testing it.
