Amid Iran protests and US attack threat, MEA clears stance on Chabahar Port

New Delhi: Iran is currently embroiled in massive protests, which have put the political landscape of the region in a tumultuous situation. The country's relationship with the United States is very strained, and everyone is wondering if President Donald Trump will attack Iran to bring back peace.

MEA clears stance on Chabahar Port

Amid such a scenario, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified the Chabahar Port in Iran. In a statement, it has said, "As you are aware, on 28 October 2025, the US Department of the Treasury issued a letter outlining the guidance on the conditional sanctions waiver valid till 26 April 2026. We remain engaged with the US side in working out this arrangement."

Notably, in October 2025, the US gave India a six-month sanctions waiver to operate the Chabahar Port. In 2024, India signed a contract with Iran for 10 years to develop and operate the port. In September 2025, Donald Trump revoked the sanctions exemptions for the port, which has been an ambitious project of New Delhi. Since 2018, India has been operating through the Shahid Beheshti terminal at Chabahar to bypass Pakistan and keep trade and aid routes open to Afghanistan and other Central Asian nations.

Iran sees massive protests for regime change

Iran is witnessing massive nationwide protests against the regime change. As per the government, close to 2,000 people have lost their lives across the country so far. According to Human Rights groups, the crackdown has claimed the lives of over 2,600 people as the administration blames ‘terrorists’ behind the protests.

The country's government planned to execute 800 protesters but has backed out after US President Donald Trump exerted pressure. As Iran continued its violent crackdown on anti-government protesters, the Trump administration sounded a strict warning that the option of military action remains. Meanwhile, amid a volatile situation in Iran, India has planned to bring its nationals back from the protest-torn country. The first batch of the stranded Indian nationals is reportedly expected to be evacuated from Iran today.
