New Delhi recently hosted a significant diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh, marking the first high-level contact since the dramatic sentencing of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh's National Security Advisor, Khalilur Rahman, met his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, in New Delhi. This interaction signals the most senior engagement between the two nations after months of strained bilateral relations.
Rahman, who arrived ahead of the Colombo Security Conclave, invited Ajit Doval to visit Dhaka during their discussions, a gesture interpreted as an attempt to stabilise relations amidst intense political tension.
The meeting occurred just 48 hours after Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh, a verdict that has sharply escalated diplomatic friction.
Hasina has been residing in New Delhi since her ouster in August 2024, prompting Dhaka to formally request her extradition, describing Indias shelter as "an intolerant act." Despite these significant challenges, Rahman's visit suggests that channels of communication between India and Bangladesh remain open.
