'Obama got it for nothing': Trump slams ex-President's Nobel Prize win

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump, who is pretty much convinced that he will win the Nobel Peace Prize for ending eight wars, has criticised Barack Obama, saying that the latter "got it for nothing". Talking to the reporters at the White House, Trump claimed his own role in brokering peace with Gaza, and mentioned that he did not do it for the award.

Hours before the Nobel Peace Prize declaration, Trump said that former President Barack Obama, achieved the Nobel Prize within a few months of his presidency. He highlighted that Obama himself did not know the reason for him to get awarded.

'Didn't do it for the prize'

At the White House, Trump claimed, "Obama received it for doing nothing. He got a prize - he didn't even know what - he got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country." Trump added, "I've stopped eight wars, so that's never happened before - but they'll have to do what they do. Whatever they do is fine. I know this: I didn't do it for that, I did it because I saved a lot of lives,".

Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 following the completion of eight months in his first term. The move had shocked many people, with the liberal New York Times reporting that the recognition was 'very premature' and arguing the Nobel 'should have a higher bar.' The Norwegian Nobel Committee described it as “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Experts have contradictory opinions

For the past few days, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he brokered peace between eight warring nations, though some nations tried disputing these assertions. His announcement comes amid heightened attention on his diplomatic efforts, particularly the truce in Gaza, which has drawn international focus. However, several experts have revealed their contradictory opinions. Nina Graeger, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, told Al Jazeera that while Trump deserves recognition for brokering the Gaza truce, “it is too early to tell whether the peace proposal will be implemented and lead to lasting peace."

Trump’s comments emphasise his continued focus on his diplomatic legacy and the Peace Prize, which he has publicly suggested could recognise his efforts, even as the committee prepares to make its official announcement.
