New Delhi: Bulgarian mystic Baba Vanga has for some decades now been a fixture of our cultural consciousness, someone whose nearly century old predictions are often discussed around the world.
As 2026 approaches, renewed attention has fallen on some of her predictions that might pertain to events that might be of significance in the upcoming year. Be it environmental fears or technological advances, Vanga’s prediction revolves around many of such current issues, but what many have their eyes on is her predictions surrounding another major global conflict and the role and fortune of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in it.
As we look to go into the next year, Baba Vanga’s predictions are being looked at with renewed interest. In this context, many of the upcoming geopolitical upheavals that could be expected are being looked at through the lens of Vanga’s prophecies. Prime among them the fears of an imminent ‘World War III’ and in this related context are the fortunes of Russian President Vladimir Putin, currently engaged in a war with Ukraine.
What is important to understand in this context is how Baba Vanga’s predictions are read, not always being straightforward, they are open to interpretation, and how they are interpreted and by whom is what is often most important. The case is similar when one looks at her predictions surrounding Putin, and why they are so variably reported across the board.
Thus, some interpretations suggest a shift in Russian leadership. Rather than portraying Vladimir Putin as victorious or dominant, these claims speak of the eventual rise of a “new Russian leader” in 2026, fueling speculation about Putin’s downfall or replacement. This angle is more about a change in Russia’s larger global impact and influence, one that is linked to its most powerful figure.
Another interpretation, often shared in media reports, is one that says Baba Vanga foresaw Putin as the “Lord of the World” and predicted Russia’s global domination. These quotes allegedly come from an interview between Baba Vanga and Russian writer Valentin Sidorov, though their authenticity remains debatable.
Thus there is no reliable evidence that she specifically predicted a Putin victory in Ukraine or Russia’s political success in this war in clear terms. Much is a recontextualisation of words attributed to her, but what they clearly point to is the global interest around Vladimir Putin, a global figure of immense power but one who has been able to remain shrouded in some vestige of secrecy.
Over the years, a wide range of events have been linked to Baba Vanga’s prophecies. While debates have occurred about their accuracy, they influence her name holds in terms of such prophecy making cannot be minimised. Some believe she foresaw the 9/11 attacks, the sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk, and Barack Obama’s presidency.
Apart from things that have already happened, she is attributed to say a lot of things currently underway or that might occur in the future. These include forecasts regarding natural disasters, global terrorism and advances in technology. In regard to the latter, many see her predicting an AI-like technology. Extraterrestrial contact is another interesting and much talked about prophecy attributed to Vanga.
