Dhaka: Hours after Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) claimed that two suspects of Bangladeshi student leader Osman Hadi have fled to India, Meghalaya Police on Sunday rejected the claims . It said that the false and fabricated reports in Bangladesh media have led to confusion.
The Meghalaya Police said it did not receive any such communication from the Bangladesh police either directly or indirectly. It said that neither of the two accused named in the report have been traced in Garo Hills. Earlier, the DMP said that two main suspects believed to be behind the killing fled to India and entered Meghalaya through the Haluaghat border.
His killing has led to massive protests across Bangladesh. On December 12, he was shot in the head during an election campaign in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area After initial treatment in Dhaka, he was flown to Singapore for further treatment, where he was declared dead on December 18.Hadi was the leader of the student uprising in Bangladesh last year that led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina Government. Hasina and some of her associates had fled to India after the uprising.
Meanwhile, even as the protests continued in Bangladesh after the killing, his outfit Inqilab Moncho has reportedly announced an all-out blockades across Bangladesh from today. The group will demand justice for Hadi and the harshest punishment for his killers.
Taking to Facebook, the group had said that the blockade to begin on Sunday. The announcement regarding this was made from the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka. The group continued a sit in from here since Friday.
Earlier on Saturday, protesters blocked roads in several cities of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Sylhet, Kushtia and Chittagong. In Dhaka, protesters moved to Aziz Supermarket to allow BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to visit Hadi’s grave.
On Saturday, activists, mainly from Inqilab Moncho, blocked roads and staged sit-ins in Dhaka, Sylhet, Chattogram and Kushtia, demanding justice for Hadi. Addressing the gathering, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber said that the agitation would intensify if the government did not bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.
“Today we are in Shahbagh; tomorrow we may occupy Jamuna [the chief adviser’s residence], the parliament or even the cantonment,” The Daily Star quoted him as saying. He added that no adviser visited the protest site since Friday.
