New Delhi: At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured after two gunmen opened fire at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening in an attack Australian authorities have designated as a terrorist incident.
The shooting took place shortly after 6.30 pm local time during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, which had drawn hundreds of people to the beachfront. Police said the attackers were armed with automatic rifles and opened fire on the crowd, triggering panic as people fled or sought shelter.
One of the gunmen was fatally shot by police at the scene, while the second was arrested and remains in critical condition. Authorities have identified one of the shooters as Naveed Akram, a man from Sydney’s south-west, but have not yet clarified whether he was the attacker killed by police or the one taken into custody. Investigations remain ongoing, with multiple agencies involved.
