New Delhi: Ahead of the Union Budget 2026 presentation, reports are doing rounds that the next phase of PM Kusum Yojana may be announced by the Finance Minister. This scheme was specially introduced to provide affordable and clean energy to the farmers. The government is now preparing to pursue this scheme in a new way. Under PM Kusum 2.0, solar energy can be further strengthened in rural and agricultural sectors. This will help in increasing the income of farmers and reducing their dependence on diesel.
PM Kusum Yojana was launched in March 2019. Its purpose is to connect farmers with solar pumps and solar electricity. It was further expanded in January 2024. This scheme provides both electricity and water facilities to the farmers. At the same time, there is a decrease in the use of diesel in farming. This scheme also plays an important role in keeping the environment safe.
The present PM Kusum Yojana is set to end in March 2026. Considering this, the government is preparing for its next phase. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has sent its proposal to the Finance Ministry. In the new phase, it is planned to promote decentralized solar projects in the agricultural sector. The government wants more farmers to join solar energy.
According to sources, the budget allocation for PM Kusum 2.0 may be more than Rs 50,000 crore. In the first phase, the government had allocated about Rs 32,400 crore. The goal was to achieve 35 GW of solar capacity. In the new phase, the focus will be on more incentive and modern technology. This will speed up solar projects.
Battery storage is likely to be included in PM Kusum 2.0. This will enable better use of solar energy. The government can insist on adopting new technology. This will make the power supply more reliable. Farmers will be helped to get electricity both during the day and night.
The government wants to increase the participation of private companies in this scheme. For this, the compliance process can be made easier. With the arrival of private investment, the speed of solar projects will be accelerated. New employment opportunities will also be created. Overall, PM Kusum 2.0 is expected to provide great support to the renewable energy sector.
