Gross GST collection doubles in 5 years: Rs 22 lakh crore in FY25
Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections have nearly doubled in five years, reaching a record Rs 22.08 lakh crore in FY25, up from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in FY21. This represents a 9.4% increase from previous fiscal year.
New Delhi: Gross GST collection has almost doubled in the time period of five years, reaching an all-time high of Rs 22.08 crore in FY25, from Rs 11.37 crore in FY21, as per the data released by the government on Monday.
The GST collection for the fiscal year 2025 has recorded a 9.4 percent surge in comparison with the previous fiscal year. In FY24, the collections were at Rs 20.18 lakh crore.
On a monthly basis, the average collection stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore in FY25, up from Rs 1.68 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year, FY24. According to experts, this monthly average collection could reach up to Rs 2 lakh crore in the coming years.
Since its inception, the number of registered taxpayers has almost swelled to over 1.51 crore, up from 65 lakh taxpayers back in 2017.
"Since its rollout, the goods and services tax has shown strong growth in revenue collection and tax base expansion. It has steadily strengthened India's fiscal position and made indirect taxation more efficient and transparent," a government statement on eight years of GST said.
In the fiscal year 2024-2025, the GST collection peaked, crossing the mark of Rs 22 lakh crore. In FY21, GST collections were Rs 11.37 lakh crore, almost doubling it within the stipulated time period. The average monthly collection was Rs 95000 crore for FY 21 as compared to Rs 1.84 lakh crore in FY24. The GST collection had touched a record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April 2025.
The rollout of GST occurred in the year 2017. On July 1st, 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while launching the GST, said it was path-breaking legislation for New India. Over the years, GST has shown strong growth in revenue collection and expanding the tax base. It has continuously strengthened India's fiscal position and made indirect taxation more efficient.
The inception of GST saw the merger of 17 erstwhile local taxes and 13 cesses into a five-tier structure. GST came with a roadmap for simplifying the tax regime.
