Stock Market closing: Sensex, Nifty settle in positive; metal, auto shares shine
The Sensex jumped 419 points to close above 81,000 level on gains in metal and auto shares on August 4, 2025. The 50-share NSE Nifty appreciated 157.40 points to end at 24,722.75.

Mumbai: The BSE Sensex jumped nearly 419 points to close at 81,018.72 on August 4, 2025, Monday. The NSE Nifty gained 157 points to settle at 24,722.75.
The gainers from the Sensex barometer included Adani Ports, Trent, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, Reliance Industries, UltraTech Cement, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel, and BEL. Laggards included ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Power Grid, and HDFC Bank.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments, said the markets closed in positive as buying was reported in metal and auto stocks. He further said that US job data indicates there could be further rate cut announcement by the Federal Reserve.
"The domestic equity market edged higher, supported by strong performance in the metal and auto sectors. A weakening US Dollar, along with robust monthly auto sales and encouraging quarterly results from leading automakers, helped renew investor interest in these sectors.
"The Q1 earnings summary indicates that consumption-driven companies are benefiting from a rebound in volume demand. Meanwhile, rising unemployment and slower job creation in the US have reinforced expectations of a potential Fed rate cut. However, there still remains room for caution due to high US tariffs," Nair was quoted by PTI as saying.
The benchmark indices jumped amid a positive trend in the Asian markets and investors were seen buying auto and metal stocks. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued to sell equities in the domestic market. Equities worth Rs 3,366.40 crore were offloaded on 1st August 2025, according to exchange data.
Shanghai's SSE Composite index, South Korea's Kospi, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended in positive territory, while Japan's Nikkei 225 settled lower. The US markets settled in negative territory on Friday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude went down 0.23 per cent to USD 69.51 a barrel.
On Friday, the 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 585.67 points to settle at 80,599.91, and the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 203 points to close at 24,565.35.
