Bengaluru: 34-year-old techie dies of suffocation in rented house fire
A 34-year-old woman working in the IT sector died of suffocation after a fire broke out at her rented house in Bengaluru's Subramanya Layout. The victim, identified as Sharmila, was found unconscious by firefighters and was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the cause of the blaze.
New Delhi: A 34-year-old woman in Bengaluru allegedly died of suffocation after a blaze erupted at her rented house. The deceased has been identified as Sharmila, who was employed with Accenture.
According to reports, the incident took place at Subramanya Layout on January 3. Sharmila, a native of Mangaluru, had moved to Bengaluru for work.
Victim died of suffocation
At around 10:30 pm, smoke was seen rising from the house. Noticing this, the landlord immediately alerted the Ramamurthy Nagar police. However, by the time police reached the spot, fire and smoke had engulfed the entire house.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control and later found Sharmila unconscious inside the house. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
A case of unnatural death
Police said Sharmila was unable to escape as the room filled with smoke. Reports indicate that she was staying in one room of the house, while her flatmate—who was away in her native place—occupied the other. The fire reportedly broke out in the roommate’s room and later spread throughout the house.
As Sharmila attempted to open the door, she inhaled a fatal amount of smoke, causing her to collapse. Meanwhile, police have registered a case of unnatural death at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station and are investigating the cause of the fire.
