New Delhi: The prestigious Turf Club in Bengaluru has temporarily suspended horse races. The races have remained suspended for the past 2 weeks now after glanders disease was detected in horses in Hyderabad. The decision to suspend races at the Turf Clubs, comes amidst growing concerns of the disease spreading to humans also from infected horses.
According to reports, the Bengaluru club was immediately alerted, by authorities in Hyderabad, after the first case of glanders was discovered. Soon after, the 700 horses under the care of the Bengaluru Turf Club were taken for medical examination.
A veterinarian took the saliva samples of the horses at the club and sent them to a laboratory in Haryana for testing. Reports said that only 1 horse tested positive for glanders. This horse has been isolated from the other animals and is being treated, said doctors.
The BTC said that all other horses were healthy and safe. The veterinary staff are continuously visiting the Turf Club to inspect the animals health and also the hygiene conditions at the club.
The Karnataka Horse Trainers Association President Pradeep Annaiah, said that each horse at the club will be tested 3 times before races resume at the Club. He said that they cannot leave any room for rumours.
He said that as of now the races have only been suspended as a precautionary measure. The Bengaluru turf club has said that only after all the animals are tested, and it is established that they are healthy enough, will races resume. These tests need to be done in a specified period of time and the experts need to submit the report to the Club at the earliest, they added.
