In the first 11 months of this year, 236 police personnel have been suspended across Karnataka, with more than half of these cases originating from Bengaluru city. Delving deeper, the last ten months have seen 124 police officers of various ranks face suspension for alleged involvement in a litany of crimes, including robbery, corruption, dereliction of duty, and even connections to drug dealing.

Data obtained by Hindustan Times from the state police department revealed a deep misconduct is no longer an isolated incident but a systemic problem.  The top-ranked suspended officials include 10 Inspectors, 16 Sub Inspectors, 16 Assistant Sub Inspectors, 41 Head Constables, and  41 Constables.

Beyond suspensions, the crisis deepens with 42 policemen statewide currently facing serious criminal charges, including dacoity, robbery, kidnapping, and extortion. The sheer scale of these numbers has profoundly rattled the department's leadership.

The severity of the situation prompted Director General and Inspector General of Police MA Saleem to issue a sharply worded circular earlier this month, warning officers that the department was rapidly losing public trust. "Our police are getting arrested for robbing victims of gold, planning dacoity, kidnapping victims for ransom, etc," Saleem lamented.

He highlighted the urgent need to restore transparency, discipline, and unwavering commitment within the force. The data exposed the blatant abuse of police authority to exploit and prey upon ordinary citizens.

The public outcry and the undeniable evidence of internal rot have also elicited a strong response from the political leadership. Home Minister G Parameshwara issued a stern warning, declaring that administrative action would not stop at mere suspension. "Policemen involved in corrupt practices will not only be suspended but also dismissed from service, after their involvement is verified," he affirmed, signalling a zero-tolerance approach.

In an immediate bid to mitigate the damage and rebuild trust, the police leadership on December 5 circulated a statewide order mandating rigorous integrity checks, thorough background verifications, and stricter oversight mechanisms for all personnel. The memo explicitly cited recent high-profile cases, including the Bengaluru ATM cash van heist and a jewellery robbery in Davanagere, as catalysts for these intensified measures.
