Delhi Metro Phase 4: New lines, stations & expansion plans

Key projects in the Delhi Metro Phase 4 include the Golden Line connecting Aerocity to Tughlakabad, a Magenta Line extension to Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, and a Pink Line extension to Maujpur. Non-priority extensions encompass the Green and Golden lines.

Delhi Metro Phase 4: New lines, stations & expansion plans

New Delhi: Over the past decade, Delhi Metro has established itself as the lifeline of the National Capital. With its 12 operational lines spanning 395.248 km and 289 stations, it is India’s longest metro network. It is also the world’s tenth-largest metro system and is expanding rapidly.

Under phase I, the construction of three corridors (Red, Yellow and Blue) measuring 65.1 km began in 1998. The Red Line between Shahdara-Rithala (22 km) with 18 stations was built in Phase I. The Yellow Line between Vishwa Vidyalaya and Kashmere Gate (11km) with 10 stations was built in this phase. The Blue line built in Phase I was from Dwarka Sector-9 to Indraprastha (32.1km).

The Phase II introduced various new lines and extensions of previous lines. The new lines included the Green Line, Violet Line, and Airport Metro Express Line (Orange Line).

Phase III also added many new corridors to the Delhi Metro along with extensions of previous projects. The new lines built in Phase III were the Pink Line, Magenta Line and Grey Line.

Presently, the Phase IV of Delhi Metro consists of a total of five projects, including three priority projects and two other projects. Under Phase IV, only one new corridor is being constructed while the other four are extensions of the existing lines.

Delhi Metro Phase IV: Priority corridors

The three priority projects measure a total length of 65.202 km and have 45 stations. The total money sanctioned for these corridors is Rs 24948.65 crore.

1. Golden Line: Aerocity - Tughiakabad (23.622 Kms)

In this corridor, 19.343 km is underground which is from Aerocity to Neb Sarai and from Anandmayee Marg Jn to Tughlakhabad. The remaining 4.279 km from Saket G Block to Sangam Vihar is elevated. The Golden Line will have a total of 15 stations, 11 underground and 4 elevated. The stations include Delhi Aerocity, Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, Kishangarh Metro Station, Chhatarpur, Chhatarpur Mandir, IGNOU, Neb Sarai, Saket G Block, Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur, Sangam Vihar – Tigri, Anandmayee Marg Junction, Tughlakabad Railway Colony and Tughlakabad Station.

2. Magenta Line extension: Janakpuri West – Ramakrishna Ashram Marg (29.262 km)

This project extends the Magenta line from Janakpuri West to Ramakrishna Ashram Marg. Out of the 29.262 km long corridor, 9.417 will be underground and 19.845 will be elevated. This adds a total of 22 new stations, 7 of which are underground and 15 elevated. The stations are: Krishna Park Extension, Keshopur, Paschim Vihar, Peeragarhi, Mangol Puri, West Enclave, Pushpanjali, Deepali Chowk, Pitampura, Prashant Vihar, North Pitampura, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalaswa, Majlis Park, Azadpur, Ashok Vihar, Derawal Nagar, Ghanta Ghar, Pulbangash, Sadar Bazar, Nabi Karim and Ramakrishna Ashram Marg. The extension from Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension was opened on January 5, 2025.

3. Pink Line extension: Mukundpur (Majlis Park) - Maujpur (12.318 Kms)

This project includes a 12 km extension of the Pink Line from Majlis Park to Maujpur. This would create a loop of Pink Lines. The new section will be entirely elevated and have 8 stations. These include: Majlis Park, Burari Crossing, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur Village, Soorghat, Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar and Maujpur-Babarpur.

Delhi Metro Phase IV: Non-priority corridors

The non-priority corridors of the Delhi Metro expand the existing Green Line from Inderlok to Indraprastha and the upcoming Golden Line from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block. 

4. Green Line extension: Inderlok to Indraprastha ( 12.377 km)

This 12.377 km long extension includes 10 stations with only one elevated and others underground. These are: Inderlok, Dayabasti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Nabi Karim, New Delhi Railway Station, LNJP Hospital, Delhi Gate, IG Stadium and Indraprastha.

5. Golden Line extension: Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block (8.385 km)

The line will be a spur or branch of the Golden Line, which will connect Lajpat Nagar with Saket G Block. The entire section will be elevated, having a total of 8 stations. These include: Saket-G Block, Pushp Vihar, Saket District Court, Pushpa Bhawan, Chirag Dilli, Greater Kailash-1, Andrews Ganj and Lajpat Nagar.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation officials stated in different media reports that the body aims to open 44 new Metro stations by the end of the financial year 2026-27. After completion, the project will boost the connectivity of Delhi to several underserved areas like Bawana, Narela and many parts of South Delhi. It is also expected to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the National Capital Region.
