Delhi: Power demand nears historic 6,000 MW peak amid harsh winter and festivities

Despite this immense pressure, discoms like BSES and Tata Power maintain seamless supply, with BSES notably sourcing over 52% of its winter power from renewable energy.

New Delhi:  The national capital is shivering through a record-breaking winter, with power consumption skyrocketing as residents battle a biting cold wave and ring in the New Year. On Friday, Delhi’s peak power demand surged to 5,595 MW, following a massive 5,603 MW peak on Thursday, the third-highest winter demand ever recorded in the city's history.

Energy experts predict that the demand will not stop here. It is projected to hit a staggering 6,000 MW this season, setting a new all-time winter high. This surge is driven by a combination of dense fog and low daytime temperatures have forced residents to rely heavily on space heaters and geysers.

New Year celebrations across the capital significantly become one of the main contributors to the evening load.

The dip in temperature is believed to be another reason for the rising electricity demand. The IMD recorded a minimum of 9.1 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, while other areas like Ayanagar hit a low of 8.1 degrees Celsius.

Reliability amid the surge

Despite the immense pressure on the grid, Delhi's power distribution companies (discoms) reported a seamless supply.

Tata Power (TPDDL): Successfully met a seasonal peak of 1,741 MW in its area without any outages or network constraints.

BSES (BRPL & BYPL): Committed to serving over 53 lakh consumers, BSES successfully managed the load while highlighting a major shift toward sustainability.

The Green Transition: In a significant move toward clean energy, BSES revealed that over 52% of its winter power is now sourced from renewable energy, including solar, wind, hydro, and waste-to-energy.

The weather office has issued an alert for a cold wave likely to grip isolated parts of Delhi between January 2 and January 5, potentially pushing power demand even closer to the 6,000 MW limit.
