New Delhi: In an extremely shocking incident, a 35-year-old man suffered severe burns after his wife allegedly poured boiling oil and red chilli powder on him while he was asleep next to their 4-year-old daughter at their home in South Delhi’s Madangir. The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of October 3, leading to the woman’s arrest.

According to police, Dinesh Kumar, who works at a pharmaceutical company, had returned home late from work, had dinner and gone to bed. Around 3.15 AM, he suddenly felt a searing pain across his torso. When he opened his eyes, he saw his wife, Sadhna, allegedly standing over him, pouring scalding oil and chilli powder onto his body.

While attacking him, Sadhna allegedly threatened, "Agar shor machaya toh aur tel dalungi (Will pour more oil if you scream).”

Neighbours rushed victim to hospital

Unable to bear the pain, Dinesh cried out for help. The noise alerted his neighbours and landlord, Nathuram, who lived on the floor below. Nathuram, along with Dinesh’s brother-in-law, Ram Sagar, rushed him to Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital, where doctors informed the police of a case of burn injuries.

"The Ambedkar Nagar police station received a MLC (Medico-Legal Certificate) report from Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital regarding a burn injury case. The MLC stated that the patient had been burnt by hot oil allegedly poured by his wife. Dinesh was subsequently referred to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment,” said DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan.

In his statement, Dinesh told police that he had gone to bed after dinner, with his wife and young daughter sleeping beside him. He awoke to find himself being attacked. "He woke up to his wife pouring hot oil on his body… She also sprinkled red chilli powder on the burns and threatened to pour more oil if he raised an alarm,” DCP Chauhan added.

Doctors described Dinesh’s injuries as "dangerous” and "scald burns”. He continues to receive treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.

Married for 8 years; disputes in relationship

According to PTI, the couple had been married for eight years but their relationship was reportedly strained. Two years ago, Sadhna had filed a complaint against Dinesh with the Crime Against Women Cell, though the matter was later settled.

A police source said the couple had argued on the day of the incident as well. "A complaint was made against the man two years ago, but the matter was resolved after mediation. Another complaint was filed against Dinesh some months ago,” the source told PTI.

Police have arrested Sadhna and booked her for attempted murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation is ongoing.
