How to travel between Bengalurus KSR Railway Station & Kempegowda International Airport | Cost, distance & travel time

For thousands of travellers and daily commuters in Bengaluru, the route between Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) City Railway Station and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is a crucial transit corridor. 

With a variety of transport options available, the choice often comes down to budget, convenience, and travel time. As the city expands, upcoming projects promise to further enhance connectivity, offering commuters a smoother journey in the near future.

For those seeking a direct and hassle-free commute, taxis remain a favoured option. Ride-hailing services such as Ola and Uber, along with prepaid taxi stands outside KSR Bengaluru, ensure seamless transfers to the airport. However, Bengaluru’s notorious traffic can make travel times unpredictable, with journeys typically lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. The fare for a taxi ride ranges from Rs 800 to Rs 1,200, making it a relatively expensive but comfortable option.

A more budget-friendly alternative is the Vayu Vajra service an air-conditioned Volvo bus operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). These airport shuttles operate at regular intervals throughout the day and night, providing a comfortable ride at a fraction of the cost of taxis. However, travel time can stretch between 90 minutes and two hours, depending on traffic conditions. Ticket prices range from Rs 300 to Rs 400, and can be purchased onboard or via the BMTC app, making it a convenient option for solo travellers and budget-conscious commuters.

For those prioritising affordability, the South Western Railway operates Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains from KSR Bengaluru to Devanahalli, with a dedicated stop near the airport. The train journey itself takes around 80 minutes, followed by a short 3.5 km shuttle bus transfer to the airport terminal, adding an extra 10 minutes. With tickets priced at just Rs 35, this is by far the most economical option available.

However, train services remain underutilised, with authorities exploring extensions to Chikkaballapur to boost ridership. Currently, eight pairs of trains, including six MEMU services, operate on this route. Yet, limited frequency and last-mile connectivity challenges continue to deter many travellers from choosing this option.

At present, there is no direct metro link between KSR Bengaluru and the airport, but significant changes are on the horizon. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is constructing the much-anticipated Blue Line, set to connect the Central Silk Board to KIA via KR Puram and Hebbal. Expected to be operational by September 2026, this metro line will offer a faster and more reliable airport transit alternative.

Additionally, Bengaluru’s ambitious Suburban Rail Project, led by the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE), aims to revolutionise airport commutes. The Sampige Line, which will connect KSR Bengaluru to Devanahalli with a direct link to KIA, is expected to significantly reduce travel times. With air-conditioned trains running every five minutes and a projected journey duration of just 67 minutes, the project is set to transform airport connectivity. The entire 148-km suburban rail project is slated for completion by December 2027, with the potential for six-coach services to accommodate growing demand.

Navigating Bengaluru’s transport network requires careful planning. Given the city’s unpredictable traffic, those opting for road-based travel should allocate additional time, particularly during peak hours. While trains offer an economical alternative, their limited frequency and the need for an additional shuttle bus may not be suitable for all travellers.

However, the future looks promising. With the upcoming metro and suburban rail projects, Bengaluru is poised for a public transport transformation that will make airport travel faster, smoother, and more efficient. Until these projects come to fruition, travellers can choose from taxis, buses, or trains based on their priorities whether it be cost, comfort, or speed.
