Hyderabad's metro system, the third largest in India, boasts three operational lines: Red, Blue, and Green. L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited operates most of the network. Phase 2 will add 63 km, improving city-wide connectivity, particularly to the airport and Outer Ring Road.
Hyderabad: The Metro system of Hyderabad is the third-largest metro network in the country after Delhi and Bengaluru. It is developed by L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (L&TMRHL). The company owns 90 per cent of the network, while the remaining 10 per cent is owned by the Government of Telangana.
The network currently has three fully operational lines: Red, Blue and Green.
Red Line
The Red Line is the oldest line of the Hyderabad Metro, which has a total length of 29 kilometres with 27 stations. The line connects Miyapur to LB Nagar. The construction of the route began on 26 April 2012, and a section was inaugurated in November 2017. The line has an interchange with the Blue Line at Ameerpet and with the Green Line at MG Bus Station. The line also crosses many stations of Indian Railways.
Green Line
The Green Line is 11 km long with 9 stations, connecting JBS Parade Ground with MG Bus Station. The corridor was opened in February 2020. The work on extending this line is underway from MG Bus Station to Falaknuma. After completion, its length will increase from 11 km to 16.6 km, and the number of stations will reach 15.
Blue Line
The Blue Line spans 27 km with 23 stations connecting Nagole with Raidurg. The construction of the line began in April 2012, and a section from Nagole to Ameerpet with 14 stations was started in November 2017. All existing sections were opened by November 2019. In phase 2, the authority is working on extending the line from Nagole to LB Nagar, stretching 5 kilometres. Additionally, the Raidurg Metro station will be connected with the upcoming Hyderabad Airport Metro Express.
Upcoming Phase in Hyderabad Metro
According to reports, Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro will add 63 km of the metro corridor to the existing network. The proposed lines will cover various areas of the city, including Gachibowli, airports, and other major residential and commercial areas. The project will also include an interchange station at Raidurg, connecting to the Outer Ring Road, which is expected to improve connectivity to other parts of the city.
Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) will execute the project at an estimated cost of Rs 24,200 crore. The development method for this phase is yet to be finalised, and it could be through the EPC or PPP (Public-Private Partnership) route.
The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has been taking various measures to ensure that the Phase 2 project is completed on time and with the highest quality standards. An elevated Hyderabad Bus Rapid Transit System, covering a distance of 20 km between Kokapet Neopolis and KPHB Colony Metro Station, will be constructed by the Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited and HMDA.
The Phase 2 project is expected to provide a much-needed boost to public transportation in Hyderabad, which relies heavily on buses and private vehicles. With its efficient and comfortable mode of transportation, the Hyderabad Metro is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and provide a safe and reliable mode of transportation for the city's residents and visitors.
