Hyderabad: The city police have stepped up efforts to tackle a persistent and hazardous traffic violation, registering over 10,000 motorists for driving on the wrong side of the road. The enforcement drive, which took place from October 1 to 7, focused on a practice that authorities say significantly increases the likelihood of accidents and traffic congestion throughout the city.

According to officials, a total of 10,652 cases were recorded against drivers caught moving against the flow of traffic. Offenders were penalised under the Motor Vehicles Act, with fines imposed to discourage such dangerous behaviour and reinforce adherence to traffic laws.

Wrong-side driving has emerged as one of Hyderabad’s most frequent traffic violations, posing serious threats to both offenders and other road users.

“Wrong-side driving has become a common and dangerous practice in Hyderabad. It not only causes congestion but also threatens the safety of both the violators and other road users,” said D. Joel Davis, Joint Commissioner (Traffic).

He highlighted that this violation is a leading contributor to road accidents, creating confusion and obstruction for motorists who follow traffic rules. Authorities noted that even brief moments of wrong-side driving can lead to near-misses or serious collisions, particularly at busy intersections and narrow lanes.

Enforcement and awareness drive

To counter the trend, Hyderabad traffic police intensified patrols, field inspections, and special drives at key junctions and accident-prone stretches.

“Our aim is to improve overall road discipline and prevent such violations through a combination of enforcement and awareness,” Davis said.

In addition to strict policing, the department has also been conducting educational campaigns to sensitise motorists about the consequences of reckless driving. These initiatives aim to foster a culture of responsible driving and highlight the shared responsibility of ensuring public safety on city roads.

Support & cooperation requested

Authorities have urged citizens to actively participate in curbing wrong-side driving by reporting violations through official social media channels or helplines. Motorists can reach the Traffic Helpline at 9010203626 or the e-Challan Helpdesk at 8712661690 to report offenders or seek guidance.

“We appeal to all motorists to follow traffic rules and avoid driving on the wrong side of the road. Such behaviour endangers not just the driver, but every commuter sharing the road,” Davis emphasised.
