More than 2,700 motorists booked for drunk driving in Hyderabad during New Year checks

Hyderabad Police Commissionerate topped the list, registering 1,198 drunk driving cases while Cyberabad Commissionerate registered about 928 cases.

Hyderabad: Over 2,730 motorists were booked for drunk driving in Hyderabad during New Year checks, as cops intensified enforcement across the city to prevent drunk driving.

Hyderabad Police Commissionerate topped the list with 1,198 cases being registered while Cyberabad Commissionerate registered about 928 cases, where drivers were caught under the influence of alcohol.

During drunk driving checks in the newly formed Malkajgiri commissionerate, at least 605 cases were registered.

Drunk drivers caught at several checkpoints, drama ensues:

New Years eve night also saw some high drama at various places with drunk drivers being caught at several checkpoints. A young man in Nampally fell at the feet of the police and appealed to them to let him go. He was later taken to the police station.

In Vanasthalipuram, another man laid down in the middle of the road and declined to move and claimed he was not drunk. He then reportedly escaped, which resulted in a complaint by the traffic police.

In Malakpet, a drunk young man demanded the police drop him at home in a patrol van after his vehicle was seized.

Drug consumption on NYE:

At least five people were arrested, including four DJs after they tested positive for drugs during checks at pubs and bars and other party venues across the city on New Years eve. The late night drive by eagle force, excise and local police carried out surprise checks at pubs across all three commissionerates.

The police said that the special checks were aimed at deterring motorists from drunk driving and to make sure that revellers reached home safely.
