New Delhi: Mumbai’s daily commuters will face major disruptions on the Western Railway as significant infrastructure work is scheduled between Kandivali and Borivali till December 29. The project will halt operations on Platforms 8 and 9.

Borivali, one of the busiest stations on the network, witnessed mounting frustration, chaotic scenes around the platforms, and overcrowded queues on Saturday as well.

A step towards efficient train operations

A non-interlocking block has been planned during the early hours of December 27–28 (between 1 am and 7 am) for the commissioning of an electronic interlocking panel on the Up and Down Fast lines at Borivali. According to railway authorities, the move is a critical step towards safer and more efficient train operations on one of the suburban system’s most congested stretches, as an additional sixth line is being added.

Several Up mail and express trains will halt at Borivali. With the fifth line also affected, multiple suburban services will be cancelled. Certain Borivali–Andheri local trains will short-terminate at Goregaon instead of running to their usual destinations. Railway authorities have advised commuters—especially fast-line users who rely on Platforms 8 and 9—to check updated timetables and announcements before travelling and to allow extra time during peak hours.

WR announced cancellations of 629 suburban services

Western Railway announced the cancellation of 629 suburban services between December 27 and December 29, severely affecting thousands who depend on local trains as their primary mode of transport. On Saturday alone, 296 services were cancelled, forcing passengers to crowd into the limited number of trains that remained operational. The situation is expected to remain challenging through the weekend.

The matter escalated as some local trains originating from Borivali and Andheri are operating only up to Goregaon, leading to forced transfers and further crowding on connecting routes. With platforms 8 and 9 at Borivali station closed until December 29, passengers have also had to deal with congestion at other platforms.
