Gold worth Rs 3.89 crore seized at Mumbai airport, 1 held
The seized gold was found to be 24-carat, with an estimated market value of around Rs 3.89 crore. The officials seized the gold under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The accused has been taken in custody and is currently being interrogated.
Mumbai: In a major operation at Mumbai Airport, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) foiled a smuggling attempt on Wednesday. The DRI officials intercepted an Indian National who arrived from Bahrain at the airport.
DRI found 12 capsules filled with gold dust
While checking his bag, the DRI officials found a 12 of 12 capsules filled with gold sust in the form of wax in his bag. The total net weight of these capsules was found to be 3.05 kilograms, which were concealed inside a water tumbler.
Accused taken into custody
The seized gold was found to be 24-carat, with an estimated market value of around Rs 3.89 crore. The officials seized the gold under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The accused has been taken in custody and is currently being interrogated. The officials are also probing the role of other individuals involved in the smuggling network.
According to a report published in Free Press Journal, DRI officials received specific inputs that foreign-origin gold in wax form was likely to be smuggled through the airport on Thursday. "The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a gold smuggling syndicate at CSMI Airport, recovering 3.05 kg of 24-karat gold concealed inside a water tumbler, valued at Rs 3.89 crore. Acting on intelligence, authorities intercepted an Indian national arriving from Bahrain on 31.12.2025,” news agency IANS reported, quoting DRI.
It added, "Twelve capsules containing gold dust in wax form were found hidden in his baggage. The gold was seized under the Customs Act, 1962. The DRI continues its intelligence-led operations to protect the nation’s economic interests.”
Four persons held last month
The DRI last month arrested four persons in connection with gold smuggling. During the investigation, it was found that one of them, an airport employee, concealed nearly 1.5kg of gold dust worth Rs 1.8 crore.
